Sculling and sweeping in the sun

For the second year running a group of tradesmen went to Seville for a five day rowing camp. The camp took place at the rowing centre CEAR La Cartuja on a branch of the Guadalquivir River, which has been channelled to eliminate tides and currents and include a 2 km international regatta course.

The 22 tradesmen participated in two daily morning sessions; one work session and one technical session. Coaches Michael and Woody – the latter also coxed the 8 – were making sure everybody was working hard in preparation for the upcoming Head races in the winter season – although apparently Woody was heard complaining about the discipline in the 8 as not everybody was paying attention 100% of the time.

That might have had something to do with the active after-rowing programme of visits to Seville’s charming old town, the impressive cathedral and the breathtakingly beautiful Alcazar castle. And perhaps it was also due to the evening outings to Seville’s amazing bars and tapas restaurants which – for some – were followed by further socialising in the hotel bar.

Everybody who took part in the oversubscribed trip seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed exchanging five days on the Thames in chilly November with five days in the sun in Seville and planning for the next rowing camp has already started. In fact, due to high demand, two camps might take place next year!
